Jan reminesces of his term as a city councilman (1973-77) (1973-77) and the continued importance impor-tance of proper planning in a resort community. Serving as liaison between the city council and the planning . commission he was instrumental instru-mental in the re-writing of the masterplan and the zoning laws. Remembering how the council desired to demonstrate foresite in the planning process Jan's involvement in-volvement insured the consideration con-sideration and anticipation of some of the problems addressed add-ressed by the current city -government. Jan's term on the council was a time of change.for Park City, drama-ticallv drama-ticallv demonstrated bv the People have a tendency to stereotype professionals representing rep-resenting occupations such j as bankingreal estate, andr, political officials. Not, however, how-ever, the individuals who represent the newspaper industry-JAN WILKING, in particular. Owner and publisher pub-lisher of Park City's "other" J weekly publication, The I Newspaper, Jan has partici- j pated in Park City people, ' politics, and progress since 1970. A man demonstrating. many talents, Jan epitomizes "humanity in transition". After completing a degree in architecture at Montana State Sta-te College, Jan demonstrated demonstrat-ed his talents while studying with Pablos Solari at Arizona State and while building a prototype of a self-help; housing project at a Napa Valley vineyard. Tempted by v the opportunity to travel, Jan , first came to Utah on his way ! east. While visiting a friend . working in the U of U Architecture Department he : was tempted to stay on to ' assist with research in the 1 computer science-architec-ture field. The University atmosphere inspired Jan to return for his masters in architectural psychology. As . an outgrowth of his interest j in large scale planning, the 1 fellowship in architectural j psychology emphasized the sociological impact. 1 Although Jan arrived in Salt Lake in 1968, it wasn't until he began, teaching Sociology at the University in 1970 that he moved to Park City. His teaching schedule required that he commute to , SLC two days each week, allowing sufficient time to : become actively involved in j Park City events. A ski1 enthusiast all his life, early days in Park City reminded him of the good times in ! Aspen. Watching the evolution evolu-tion of Aspen and his architectural planning background back-ground made him sensative 1 to the necessity to plan for the inevitable growth of Park City. This insight, coupled with the transitional experi-? : . hiring of Park City's first : City Manager. - Memories provide Jan the image of "intimacy" of early Park City, when members of the commu nity were recog-nized recog-nized as individuals. Although Al-though the scale of the community has changed Jan feels that, although some of that intimacy was lost, recreational amenities and : opportunities for residents and visitors are more , avail-able avail-able now than in the past. It is the present and future of Park City that Jan and his staff at The Newspaper try to emphasize in the weekly publication. And as Park City evolves, so does the focus of the paper, Formerly , a partner ia the organization, , . Jan is now totally respons-ible respons-ible for the operation, j Assisted by quality staff, Jan ' and his crew are responsible for the LODESTAR publication, publica-tion, the Alpine Real Estate .. Guide, as" well at The Newspaper. Concentrating on .publishing. Jan. is committed com-mitted to reflecting quality in ' the growth and deve!6pment c-of c-of the' paper and the community.
