Capable Gal Joins Riding Stable Staff Harriet, a capable 22-year old gal, with a list of accomplishments ac-complishments and credentials creden-tials as long as your right arm, joined the riding stables' staff a little over a month ago when her cousin Dorrie Spurlock gave her a call at her home in Woodstock, Wood-stock, Connecticut and offered offer-ed her a job. Dorrie along with her husband MikeSpur-lock MikeSpur-lock have operated the Park "I love it out here in Utah," says Harriet Mac-gregor, Mac-gregor, the newest addition to Park West's Riding Stables' staff of instructors. '1 feel closer to my roots." West Stables for several years. "I do a little of everything every-thing around here," rambled the 22-year-old horse woman, wo-man, "I teach western as well as English style riding, also a little jumping." Apart from lessons, Ms.Macgreg-or Ms.Macgreg-or conducts pack trips, daily rides, campouts and will shortly begin offering an unusual un-usual class in stable management. man-agement. Harriet also is quite adept in breaking and training horses. "I like breaking and working work-ing with young horses," says Ms. Macgregor. "You never know what they are going to do you have to be constantly on your toes." The Scottish lass began her riding career on a donkey don-key when she was 4-years old and since then has done about everything you can think of associated with horsemanship. Harriet studied English style riding for awhile in Sommerset, England where she received her Horse Master's Mas-ter's certificate as well as her B.H.S.A.I. (British Horse Society Assistant Instructor). In-structor). She also studied under Dr. Van Strike of Cav-andish, Cav-andish, Vermont, who is one of top "dressage" (formal riding) authorities in the country. She also studied under Bruce Davidson, a member of the UJ3. Olympic Equestrian team. "I would have liked to have competed in the equestrian events at the last Olympic games," grins Harriet, "but I went professional too early besides be-sides at the time I didn't have a good enough horse." Ms. Macgregor's working career is as impressive as . her education. Apart from working for a veterinarian, she has managed a private stable in Bermuda and last summer conducted her own horsemanship camp in Connecticut. Con-necticut. Back East, in her spare time, she trained Morgans Mor-gans and participated in the eastern show circuit. She also represented Connecticut Con-necticut in the Eastern states show horse competition. As far as her career goes Harriet Macgregor is living liv-ing for the day when she will own her own stable and equestrian center but right now she says she is coasting with regard to her career. I want to gain as much experience as I can work-I work-I ing with all kinds of horses , in all kinds of stables so when I get ready to open my own stable, it'll be the best around." But if business gets any better at Park West Stables, "just coasting" will soon turn into "just madly run-, run-, ning around." |
