The summary sum-mary shows: Two thousand nine hundred and twenty-three persons were Injured on July 1 this year, of whom 13J died. Sixty seven deaths were due to tetanus; te-tanus; 19 were killed outilght by firearms; 11 by explosion of powder, bombs or torpedoes; 6 by cnnnoiu or similar contrivances, while 20, mostly most-ly little girls, were burned to death by fire from fireworks. Startling as Is this showing, it is the best since 1903. when the Journal Jour-nal began keeping if5 record In 1903 4.149 persons were injured, of whom 406 lost their lives, 106 of them dying dy-ing from tetanus. The grand total for eight years shows that 37.520 persons per-sons hae been Injured in Independence Indepen-dence .lav celebrations. Of these 1,00.3 died, 094 as tbo direct result of their Injuries, and 9 SO from tetanus ledlowiug injuries One hundred and twenty-two peivons have lost their eyesight; 551 have lest the use of one eye; -132 have lost the use of arms, legs or hands, and 1.5H have been crippled by the loss of fingers. The detailed figures for 1910 show 72 cases of lockjaw, 67 of which were fatal; 7 persons lost their sight; 33 lost one eye; 20 lost arms, legs or hands, and 111 lost their fingers. The accidents were due to the following causes: Blank cartridges. 3''0; firecrackers, fire-crackers, 1.050, cannon, 212; firearms, 120: powder rind fireworks. 970 The decrease from 1903 and 1910 due to more intelligent methods of celebration, the most marked decreases de-creases occurring in states where th agitation for restrictive measures was most urgent. |
