Show ENGLISH IK HIGHSCH00L The English department of the Os-Jen Os-Jen High school has for Its object the preparation of its students, not only to meet tho college requirements, require-ments, but lo rend the lanpuatje understanding', under-standing', to express thoughts with directness and force In written and ipoken discourse, and to cultivate a taste for pood readlnp. developed through an appreciative familiarity with certain masterpieces of Knp- , lish and American literature. This object is attained by a careful an 1 I systematic study of tho literature it- t;Hf and intelligent perception of the meaning of the language being the first essential. Training In composition is regular reg-ular and sstetnatlc, being carried along with literature through tho entire en-tire course. Every pupl'. writes one long theme a week, besides tho various var-ious exercises demanded In class. There are two features in the course of study which deserves special mention, men-tion, nameb. the study of Cayley's "Classic Myths iu Literature" in tho first year, and the review of grammar in the senior year The xtudy 01 Mythology, besides giving Ihe students stu-dents a certain amount of culture, j coulps them for the appreciation of ' the masterpieces in literature; while I the review of grammar plvcs. the ' t'-achcr a chance to Impress tho val-of val-of tho "Mother Tongue" upon the student at an ago when he' can best recognize this value. I At present there arc six teachers i employed in this department, ail of whom are competent instructors. That the standard set by the High Fchool has been efficient is proved by the fact that most of tho graduates who have gone away to school have won honors from the leading universities univer-sities In the United State. |
