Show FIRST SOCIALIST IN CONGRESS. The Socialists have broken into congress. Victor L. Berger, of ' the Fifth district in Milwaukee, is to represent Wisconsin in the national congress. Within a few years there will be more Socialists in congress, as the drift of the labor vote is to Socialism. From California to New York, the Socialists have made sur-" sur-" prising gains. There is nothing to be feared from this growth of the Socialistic ' sentiment among the labor unions, as Socialism, as now understood, is . nothing more than radical Populism. Though Populism has disappeared, disap-peared, that much denounced party made an indelible mark on American Am-erican politics. One-half the progressive legislation of today is borrowed bor-rowed from the original demands of the Populists, and it is just possible that much of the Socialistic doctrine, hko Populism, will be adopted by the old parties as the people become better educated as to what the Socialists demand. We do not look or the Socialists to gain control of congress or to dominate any great number of states, but they will become strong : enough to gain a respectful hearing and to force some of their tenets "onto the Democratic and Republican parties. The demands of Socialists that child labor cease and that in no industry shall the hours of labor be so long as to be destructive of . the health of the employes are two planks to which we can subscribe sub-scribe and yet we are not in accord with the Socialists in many of .their other doctrines. |
