The car is also -equipped with fire-fighting apparatus of all kinds, safety electric lamps, pumps for refilling, oxygen tanks and 200 potash cartridges for absorbing black damp. , The law creating the new department was passed at the last session ses-sion of congress, and the accidents nnd explosions in Colorado were partly responsible for its enactment. It is expected to be a great factor fac-tor in the work of preventing mine accidents and explosions in the future. States will be asked to co-operate. - MINE RESCUE CARS. The mines rescue car, fully equipped with every modern appliance to saves lives and rescue miners after accidents and explosions, and to teach miners the use of the rescue heldiet3 and other equipment designed de-signed to be first aid to the injured, has arrived in Denver, where it will remain until next Tuesday. It is controlled by the department of the interior, bureau of mines, and is one of the seven cars sent throughout the country by the government in the hope that the mine catastrophes which have swept 30,000 miners out of existence in j thirty years can be avoided. . J The car which is in Denver is the second to be sent out by the government, the first going to the Pittsburg mining district. The third car of the department will be sent to Salt Lake City, where it will be permanently located. J. C. Roberts, a mining engineer of Pittsburg, Pitts-burg, i3 in charge of the work of the car now in Denver. It is planned to have the car visit every mining camp in the state, arjd it is the intention in-tention to teach at least 500 miners each year the use of the helmet and other appliances. The headquarters of the car will be at Trim-dad, Trim-dad, but it will be out through the state most of the time. Engineer Roberts will be in Denver when not with the car. Demonstrations are to be given daily in the car and all are invited. in-vited. The first aid to the injured demonstrations are in charge of the Red Cross Hospital society, with Dr. J. M. Shields director. He will join the car in Denver in December and will go on an extensive lecture lec-ture tour. Roberts is to be the helmet engineer, and in addition he will have charge of the investigation of the mines of the district. This feature more than any is expected to result in many radical changes in the mines, and the companies will see to it that the govera- ment officials find no defects if they can take care of them before the spector goes to work in Colorado. This state was selected for the work of the second car because of the large number of accidents which have happened in the past few years and the frightful number of lives which have been lost.
