Show POOR OF THE CITY SHOULDBE AIDED. Has the great wave of social con- Bclousness and phllanthrophy now sweeping the country left Ogden untouched? un-touched? Does this city with it'J, J boasted weaJth lack in public spirited men and women who have, means and i wealth at tht-lr command? I Juvenile Judge V. C. Gunnell fears that Ogden's people of affluence are , not devoting the time and money that ' they should to the uplift of the city's unfortunate women and children and claims that the indifference with which women of means view tho dls tress of tho poor In many quarters of the city Is astounding. "lf you stop and think," said the Judge yesterday afternoon, "you will And evidence of thU indifference in j the absence of any hope, orphajiair , or place fitted up and malntaJned in I this city for Its unfortunate children ; end yoji may go further and observe, i that thero is little In all Ogden to fhow that any wealthy citizen ever cared a fig for our rroplc as a whole or for the poor. The girt of tb grounds for tho high school by Mr. and Mrs. Fred J. Klesel is perhapR the only thing that comes to your mind. When we think of the generosity gener-osity of wealthy men and women of other states and cities even of Salt Lake City it certainly does appear out of place- for us to boast of being one of tho wealthiest cities of our f Ize. "If T were to tell yon of the cases of unfortunate children which I have in mind whose surroundings are most unfavorable for moral, mental or physical phy-sical well being, cases such as the law says must not be endured, with only momentary relief, you certainly would go away In deep study." Judge Gunnell further stated that he is now promoting a movement which he hopes will give more permanent per-manent succor to the many destitute children of Orden, but bo says that In order that tho present project may be a success he must hao the support sup-port of more of tbo Influential citizens citi-zens of tho city, "Something must be dono," he said, "either by individuals, charitable, societies so-cieties or ly tho authorities tending to the relief of many widowed mothers moth-ers beforo winter is upon them." Thero Is poverty and suffering not due In any way to tho victims' lack of economy or dislike of labor and this should not bo in a wealthy city like Oqden, in the twentieth century." |
