Show SPREADING THE BAD REPORT. George Craig, one of the local canners, has been informed that Kansas City papers have republished the criticism of the Utah canneries can-neries made by Deputy Inspector Smith before a parents' class in Salt Lake, and have added most uncomplimentary comments as to the methods of doing business followed in Utah. As we feared at the time, the newspapers of other canning centers cen-ters are using the ill-advised statement of Inspector Smith to the injury of the Utah canning industry. The rivals for business within the territory covered by Utah canned goods will spread the story of unsanitary conditions to all points and the damage may be irreparable. irrepar-able. The canned goods of Weber county, we know, are in every point of excellence superior to the goods of competitors, but whatever their merits, the local products must suffer, if our own people volunteer volun-teer the statement to the outside world that our goods are unclean anrl linwholpnflmp There may have been somo defects in the method of canning, but whatever might have been those shortcomings, they equally apply ap-ply to other canneries beyond our boundaries. In the past the washers have been imperfect, as elsewhere, but there is not a factory in this district that is not substituting those washers for the very latest machinery in spraying and steam cleaning, clean-ing, so that with the improvements this season, Weber county will lead in the number of planta where the most modern equipment is installed. In the meantime some action should be taken to counteract the effect of tho blunder made by the inspector in Salt Lake. |
