With the return to vogue of tho rag rug and "crazy" quilt farm women in many sections Of the country havo found another means of addng to the family fam-ily income Thus the art of making these rugs and quilts, started in tho rural sections in colonial days, returns re-turns again to the farm. Department agents report that tho vomen and girls themselves started .. i .in., nation of the art. and now extension agents ure spreading and J' encouraging it. In Arkansas and Mississippi especially, the farm women have taken up the rug making. One agent recently reported a woman neir Little Lock was devoting her spare jtlmo to making pulled, or hokSd ruga, in designs she took from nature ' herself, using flowers and forest leaves for her models and Is finding a ready market at good prices for her output In another part of the same state another woman. uria;r a wooden loom brought from England many years ago. not only Is making rugs, but la weaving beautiful woolen coverlets of unusual design. In addition many of the popular rag rugs are being made, including the braided and crocheted types. Crazy quilts and counterpanes of applique ap-plique work ary also being revived. Tho women, however, are not confining confin-ing their efforts toward the manufacture manufac-ture of the articles, but are teaching their neighbors and have even organized organ-ized classes for tho renewal of th pioneer arL |
