Show Chairman Douglas Gives Out Statement of Status in Drive Here Editor of the Standard-Examiner: Ogden. Utah, April 23d. 1920. Dear Sir: As chairman of tho Mormon Mor-mon Battalion Memorial Monument Committee of Weber County, I am frequently fre-quently asked this question: "How are you getting along with your campaign for funds for the monument?" And in answering the question it only reaches the inquirer. I have, therefore, there-fore, thought best to write you and( ask you to publish a short sttaoineut that the public and those interested maybe fully advised. One reason why I ask you to publish tho statement is this: On April Hih' you published a poem submitted by Dr. A. S. Condon, and as a heading for! that article you said "Ogdcn'3 Quota! for Battalion Fund eighty Per Cent Subscribed." Then you followed by saying Ogden was allotted approxim-j ately $12,000 and of this amount $11,-700 $11,-700 has been raised. This you will see is an error and has slightly militated mili-tated against the work. Most thinking think-ing people would have said there has been a typographical error and tho amount .raised'if eighty per cent would : bo $9,600 instead of $11,700 as stated.. But, owing to the statement some I have thought that we have reached the top whereas we are still about twenty per cent short. The $12,000, allotted is not for Ogden but for Weber We-ber county. Weber county's popula-j tion is about fifty thousand so youi see a small contribution fromeachj Individual would bring us the required! amount, but as it is impossible to de-j pend upon each individual lnthis, as! In all cases where funds are raised,! it necessitates a larger contribution j from some to offset no contribution; from others. The committee has labored under some disadvantages such as influenza and stepping aside occasionally for other campaigns such as the Jewish Relief, and other that might be men-; Honed, thus necessitating tho cam- pp.ign for the Monument Fund to be j drawn out longer than it otherwise! would have been. However, those who! arc working for (he fund are working j sincerely, and it is their aim to notj cease until llic required amount Is' raised. It would be a pity and a step backward if this small amount re-! quired of us should fall short of one hundred per rent and the Aviiter will say that with the efforts and deter minaiion of those in charge It will noti fall short. The exact amount raised to this date is 59.5S2 34. and the exact umount re-i quired of this county is $11,708 60.1 Thus, you will see we are still about twenty per cent short. The commit ! tee hopes the solicitors and those in! charge of. raising funds will not slack- en their efforts but instead that theyj will increase their efforts until such time as Hie full amount Is raised.; Some of the wards have raised one) I hundred per cent and some are still In the. arrears. Those who have1 reached the high mark, of course, will not be called upon to contribute fur-1 thor but there arc sections of the county I hat have not contributed their auotxi and upon these we call at this tlmo to aid us. Wo trust wjth the effort that Is now being put forth that within a very short time we will be able to report that we have reached the required al-l lotment for the county. Respectfully yours. i JAMES A. DOUGLAS, j County Chairman. oo l |
