Show CJPT. JOi HOOD SAW SERVICE ON BflTTLEFRDNT Captain John Guthrie Heywood, son of A. R. Heywood, returned to Ogden yesterday from France, bringing with him a very enviable service record with the American expeditionary forces and also with the American army of occupation. Captain Hey. wood, his wife and baby daughter are visiting at the Heywood home and Will spend several days in the city Captain Heywood was with the Ninety-first division throughout its or- I ganization and development at Camp Lewis, and crossed the Atlantic foi i service in Prance. Captain Heywood first went Into ! battle with this division In the first j battle of the Argonne drive, the fight that brought great fame to the west- j ern men. After this he was sent to Paris on special duty, and was there placed under assignment to the first army with headquarters at Souilly. and was given a picked force of 100 ! mounted Americans for service on the Verdun front, participating in the cleaning up of that area. He was then sent to various places in France, where he was in command- When the armistice was signed this picked force was combined with a second sec-ond division company under command of Captain Heywood Soon alter he reported lo the Third army, known as the Army of Occupation at Long-way, Long-way, and was sent north with troops to occupy Arlon, county seat of Lux- j emburc countv, Belgium, and was , military commander there for some time. He continued on with the army j of occupation to ('olbenz, and was (bare assigned to take over the bridge- J head and ferries. He was then a-Signed a-Signed to the Fourth corps, first di- I vision troops, from which he se iired his release and was returned to the United Slates in advance of the Ninety-first division. |
