Show DR. RICH TALKS .IT NINTH WARD Says Parents Cannot Be Honored Hon-ored by Children Unless Worthy of It "Although 'honor thy father and thy mother' is n command from God, compliance com-pliance 'with this commandment is not possible unless parents arc worthy of being honored by their children," Dr. Edward I. Ttich told the large congregation congre-gation at the Ninth ward chapel last night. Dr. Rich had been invited to deliver an address upon the subject at tho service, which was held under tho auspices of the ward parent class. W. A. Koldowyn, leader of the class, presided. pre-sided. Dr. Rich said the word honor meant consideration, deference, respect, and this honor was to bo given parents by their children because of worthiness; it could not otherwise bo oxpected. Children, ho said, when quite young, might be made to obey their parents, bui in later life, unless they wero worthy, It would be impossible for children to give honor to their parents. There are duties for parents toward children as well as duties of children to parents, the speaker intimated, and said that if the parents did not set good examples they had no right to expect either obedience or honor from tho children. Discussing tho promise of the Lord that children who would honor their parents "shall livo long upon the land," the speaker said this was only possible when parents had trained themselves to becomo proper parents. Through living laws of health and learning wisdom, such parents may Impart to their children an heritage of long life, wisdom and knowledge. The speaker called attention to the fact that under Iho Mosaic law children chil-dren who wcro disrespectful to parents, par-ents, those who struck or cursed their parents, were put to death. During the service selections were rendered by tho ward choir, vocal selections se-lections by J. R. Hcndcrsen. saxaphonc selections by Miss Edras Chrlstenscn, and violin selections by Miss Grace Barton. nn |
