Show ml '.mm RESIGNS MS POST Ambassador to Mexico Convinced Con-vinced Further Efforts to Bring Accord Are Futile WASHINGTON. Jan. 28. (By the I Associated Press.) ITehry P. Flctch- er has resigned as United States ambassador am-bassador to Mexico to talce effect In the course of the next few weeks. Those who know the reason for Mr. J Fletcher's decision say that ho wasi convinced that a continuation of tho! efforts he has made during the four! years in which he has held this im-j porlant post to bring tho Carranza government into accord with the U. S. . government on tho many irritating is-i sues which have arisen, involving the protection of American lives and property prop-erty rights, would be futile. He terminates ter-minates IS years of service in the diplomatic dip-lomatic branch of tho government with great regret and without any particular par-ticular plans for his own future, but fools certain ho can no longer be helpful help-ful in cultivating proper relations with Mexico as lous as President Carranza remains in control there. The ambassador's ambas-sador's activity in tho presentation of the American demands, have made it certain that he could not return to his post with benefit to either government. Mr. Fletcher's resignation was not hastily determined upon and, in fact, lust summer he sought to terminate his relations with tho state department. depart-ment. But, owing to the state of public pub-lic business and the illness of somo of the higher officials ot tho department, he was induced to remain in Washington Washing-ton to act as adviser to the secretury in matters relating not only lo Mexico but to all Latin-America, for which work he was peculiarly fitted by rea- son of his long experience in that part of tho world. State department officials tonight did not offer any confirmation of the reported resignation and Mr. Fletcher, himself, is absent from Washington. Mr. Fletcher was appointed ambassador ambas-sador to Mexico in February, 191G, but did not go to Mexico City until tho February Feb-ruary of tho following year, having come to the United States rfom Chile where he was the American ambassador ambassa-dor for a long aeries of conferences. |
