Show STUDYING CHINESE. Julian Arnold, commercial attache to j the American legation at Pekin. ex-j presses the regret that thousands of ; Americans are studying Spanish to J qualify for the Latin-American trade , I but few are studying Chinese in prep-j jaralion for what will bo the greatest I I market the world has to offer. I This is a tip to bright young men or ! young women with leanings toward I business. i I It seems highly probable that the (United Stales will succeed in getting a j big share of the Chinese trade. To 'handle this business men and women i j who can read and write Chinese will j Jbo in demand. There are mighty few who now can handle correspondence with Chinese firms and when the demand de-mand grows the salaries will be ! boosted. Chinese declare that it Is a diffl-, cult task for young Chinese to learn the Chinese alphabet and language. It it is hard .for the Chinese to learn their own language, it will be much harder for Americans to obtain a working knowledge of It. But there is nothing too difficult for the American brain and any person who has the ; staminaand ability to learn Chinese j should be well repaid for hjs efforts in the next ten years. Incidentally it might be mentioner'. j that any increase In trade with China j means added prosperity for manufac- turers whose plants are near the Pa-1 clfic coast becaifse manufacturers in i Utah, say. should be able to put freight on board ships at San Francis- ( co at less cost than the man in Boston Bos-ton or New York. !
