Show GENERAL MANAGER OF NATIONAL ' COUNCIL OF DEFENSE ROASTS CONDUCT OF THE OGDEN POLICE J. Phillip Bird, general manager of the National Council for Industrial Defense, De-fense, caused a sensation at the meeting meet-ing of business and professional men :t the Hotel Utah lasl night when he stated that the Oqden chief of police should have been dismissed from r-vico r-vico immediately following tho trouble a few weeks ago between strikebreakers strikebreak-ers and union leaders. Mr. Bird took up the point and ex pressed in vigorous language his condemnation con-demnation of such practices as un-American un-American and unbefitting the high plane of American Citizenship. Ho further stated that the government failed in its contraot to protect the rights of th? men who had paid to be transported tc their destination without with-out interruption and with the full pio-lection pio-lection of the law. .Mr. Bird also stated that he would have a petition so large that a train would be unable to carry it signed, ; nd he would further see that tho Ogden chief of police were removed, had he been a resident of ihis it. About sixty Ogden men were In attendance, at-tendance, including Miles Jones, commissioner com-missioner of public safety. Mr. Jones met with Mr Bird following the din- nor anil asked him where he obtained Ills inform. i' ion, to which Mr Bird re-plied re-plied James Emery of Washington, to-t to-t nher with Stephen Mason of Now York, also addressed the gathering.
