Show PERSHING A YEAR AGO. As to whether Gen. John J. Pershing thought a year ago that the war would end soon thereafter, .the general is quoted as making a characteristic charac-teristic reply. His smile seemed to indicate, according to the New York World, "that on the date in question he was not preoccupied with the end of the war, but with the outcome of the immediate matter in hand, the actual American offensive. Then he paid his compliments to the countless prophets and experts who 'knew that peace would come before be-fore last January. 'That was an absurd statement,' said the general. Tf any one person knew that he thought quite differently from the allies.' When asked if 1920 was the limit he replied, 'The limit was victory.' The extent and intent of America's participation in the war by the side of her allies has been expressed nowhere else with such satisfying vigor and terseness as in that sentence." |
