"The board of health will meet at 1:30 o'clock this afternoon," said Dr. Samuel G. Paul, city health commissioner, commis-sioner, last night, "for the purpose of considering the situation and determine deter-mine what steps to take. It is true that Spanish influenza has found its way to the city, "and we believe we have located the source of it We are convinced that the malady was ! brought to Salt Lake by a family from Evanston, Wyo., who came to attend '. the state fair." "Up to noon today we had discovered discov-ered eight or ten cases, and it Is possible, pos-sible, If not probable, that others have ) busy since noon and have not exam- ined the late reports as yet, sothat I can not state positively. The first case brought. to light was the mother of an Evanston family, who is suffer- ing from an aggravated case. This '4 case originated Wednesday. This A morning we found that her daughter I also had fallen vlcftm to the ailment, i and shortly thereafter we found that J the daughter's little girl was develop- j ing the same symptoms. Investigation j developed the. fact that the rest of ; tho family, who remained at Evans- ' ton, are all sick with the same dls- ease. Roomers Are Sick. fc J "Next, we found a rooming house on if West South Temple street, where five j or six of the guests were sick in bed. n A rigid investigation determined the fact that all were suffering from tho same disorder, which was identified . as Spanish, influenza. It Js not advis- f able to give out names and addresses at this time, as it could not serve any I; jiseful purpose, anyway. Wo have talten specimens of sputum from the victims and have been engaged this afternoon in making cultures in the city hospital laboratory. "All victims of the disease have been isolated, and every possible precaution pre-caution is being takon to guard the public health. I wish, however, to repeat re-peat that whether the disease becomes epidemic or not, depends largely upon tho nrnnlf nf iho Hfv lVinm;flvrs They should follow as closely as possible pos-sible the instructions recently issued by this office and by the state health commissioner. If this Is done, the disease dis-ease can be more easily controlled. All cases should be reported at once, and those affected should go to bed Immediately Imme-diately after they learn they have contracted con-tracted the ailment and remain there " Taking early precautions agaln.st the spread of Spanish Influenza in Utah, Dr. T. B. Beatty, state health commissioner, commis-sioner, yesterday issued orders that' immediately upon appearance of the disease physicians report the case ,pr cases to his department, causing prompt isolation of the patient, or patients. pa-tients. Statement by Beatty. Dr. Beatty says that while no case of Spanish' infaienza has as yet appeared ap-peared In Utah to his knowledge, it is natural to assume that a visitation of the disease will eventually come to the state. The health department Is determined deter-mined to minimize as much as possible pos-sible spread of the disease when it shall make its appearance, and is thus early in tho field with its instructions and requirements. For the information of tho public, Dr. Beatty gives the following brief statement with reference to Spanish influenza, which Is rampant In many parts of the United States: "On annon rn n nr nf Vi flrot toms, which consists of chilliness and general discomfort, quickly followed by fever and severo aching tho person per-son affected should immediately go to bed. By so doing he will very much lessen tho dangerous complication of pneumonia, which is otherwise liable to follow, and also will avoid communicating commu-nicating tho disease to others. "For treatment a physician should be consulted, or if the advice of a physician phy-sician is not available, a large dose of physic and hot drinks may be taken with benefit To alleviato the pain and fever, a ten-grain dose of Do vers powder or several five grain doses of aspirin two hours apart are useful. "All discharges from tho nose and mouth should be destroyed and the mouth covered when sneezing or coughing. "To prevent taking the disease, public pub-lic gatherings should be avoided on account ac-count of the added liability of coming in contact with a person having tho disease. To increase the resistance o the body to tho invasion o the germs of the disease with which it may come in contast, living room should be well ventilated, overeating should bo avoided and the general health promoted in every way possible." pos-sible." oo |
