Show STATE ROAD SHOULD BE COMPLETED I Weekly Roflex: Commercial bodies and good roads organizations of Salt Lake nnd Ogden are to tako up tho proposition of completing the hard surfaced state road between those cities. cit-ies. Somo throo weeks ago the publicity pub-licity bureau of tho Weber club wont on record as favoring the proposition and now comes tho roport that like organizations or-ganizations in Salt Lako City are taking tak-ing up tho work of organizing a campaign cam-paign for the completion of tho road. The fact that the pooplo of the big towns have at last become alive to the importance of tho completion of this road will bo welcome news to tho citizens citi-zens of Davis countv. Davis county has exponded thousands and thousands thou-sands of dollars on this road from time to timo, both as a county and through tho stato road commission, which Is now In charge of tho road. Tho peoplo of tho county want tho road completed from ono end of tho county to the other, oth-er, but thoy want tho stato of Utah and the United States government to do tholr share of the work. As a mat-tor mat-tor of fact, DavlB county has already expended about Its full share for the construction of this road If a Just ap- a i. -k il. tU-nA A year ago It was estimated that 75 per cent of the traffic over this road originated outsldo of Davis county, but it is now believed that tho estimate Is" too low. A gentleman, who Is In position po-sition to computo tliis percentage kept count of automobiles passing over the road last summor, and It is his opinion that 90 per cent of the traffic traf-fic originates outsido of tho boundar- i ios of this county. If this deduction bo true, It would be just that the stato of Utah complete tho concreting of Another feature to be taken into consideration Is tho fact that considerably consider-ably moro than half of the stato road through Davis county Is used as a government gov-ernment post road and tho government, govern-ment, by the terms of the law relating relat-ing to post roads, is ready to stand a large part of the expenso for the completion com-pletion of the road. The federal government is also Interested In-terested in the completion of this road from a military standpoint and tho officers of-ficers at Washington are doing all in their pqwer to speed up good roads construction. This assertion is contrary con-trary to a news note recently published pub-lished in a Salt Lako City newspaper, but It Is, nevertheless, true, and Is proven by the following telegram which Is self explanatory: Western Union Telegram Copy Washington, D. C, Feb. 2, 1918. F. A. Cannon, Executive Secretary Good Roads Association of Wisconsin, Wiscon-sin, Madison. "Speeding up construction on good roads is an integral part of government govern-ment war work. Efficient transportation transporta-tion is necessary to reduce margin between be-tween producer and consumer, . "HERBERT HOOVER." Recently, from timo to time, it has been reported that tho general government gov-ernment was discouraging good roads building, but from the above and other oth-er telegrams along tho samo line, such docs not seem to bo the case. It is also understood that the auto mobile tax now being collected in this state amounts to near $200,000 and when It Is considered that perhaps 50 per cent of the automobiles of tho state traverse Davis county, at least one-half that amount should bo appropriated appro-priated for tho construction of this road. The people of Davis county are entitled to have this road constructed when tho amount of money thoy have already expended is taken into consideration; consid-eration; tho people of Salt Lake City and Ogden, who almost dally uso this road and pay the greater part of tho automobile tax are entitled to tho road; and last but not least, the post-office post-office department and the war department depart-ment need this road. "Why not have it and havo It soon? Tho money with which It could be built will be collected whether it will bo built or not In fact, it is being collected now from auto owners, and as we understand It, government funds are available with which to assist if application Is mado by the proper authorities au-thorities in Utah to the proper authorities authori-ties In Washington. |
