Show I EXERCISES ST THE OGDEN H SCHOOL i Dr. E. G. Gowans spoke yesterday afternoon at the Ogden high school at the Thanksgiving exercises on "What Hhe school children can do to help win the world war." He first explained the difference between autocracy and democracy, pointing out particularly that democracy could only be successfully success-fully expressed by combined individual effort and that because of this America Ameri-ca had been slower to act than a country coun-try such as Germany, where autocratic power directed every move with precision. pre-cision. Every American he said should get behind the government with all his support to aid during the present crisis. Tho work of the school children chil-dren was to devote their energy to getting the most 'from pie instruction being given them that they might be fitted for the positions they would be called to in the future. He urged them to be self sacrificing that the soldiers in the field might have plenty for their needs and to use their spare time for H useful accomplishment for the benefit "H of the nation. B The high school orchestra of twenty - H five pieces gave three selections, "Poet H and Peasant" overture, "Spring, Beauti H ful Spring" and "Request" Lewis Wal- H lace and Fred Conway gave two hu- H morous readings, "Mr. Doolcy on the 1 Grippe" and "The Thanksgiving Bles- H sin." An original poem for this occa- H sion written by Leda Wadsworth was H recited by Ruth Nolson. It was called H "Thanksgiving 1917" and follows: H Not very many years ago, if I romem- H ber right, H Our motto on Thanksgiving was H "Eat Everything in Sight." H We starved ourselves for days and H days to do this noble deed, H And when the great occasion came, H we were ready for the feed. H We started in on turtle soup and went H right through to pie, B About this time we looped our belts, H and prepared ourselves to die. H -TTis different now, you will agree, with H a sigh or salty tear, H 'Tis a very strange Thanksgiving H that we will have this year. H In tho first course they'll give us, a H lettuce leaf to chew,' H And. then a boiled potato, and a drop of gravy H 'A. piece of fish will grace the dish, H where turkey used to reign, And after a slice of cornmeal bread, H a dish of rice will train. H We sadly think of other years, when H to King Turkey we did bow, fl But mother's signed the Hoover H pledge there's nothing doing H But smile a bit. To do without these B things won't make you ill, 1 And remember that It's going to H help to beat the kaiser, "Bill." H "What Thanksgiving Should Mean H This Year" was tho subject of an nd H ureas by Miss Vera DeLamatar. The H program was concluded by Principal H BeeBon making several announce - fl xnents. |
