Show . SOLDIERS ARE I HIGHLY PLEASED I Wilson's Answer to Peace Note Gives Satisfaction to Men and Officers. WITH THE AMERICAN ARMY IN FRANCE. Sept. IS. (By the Associated Associat-ed Press.) From tho manner in which the American army received tho news of President Wilson's reply to Austria Aus-tria -Hungary's peace note, Us attitude might be characterized aa one of grim approval. The report of the Austrian suggestion sugges-tion that a peace conference "be held circulated rapidly yesterday from headquarters far In the roar to the front line trenches, and tho officers and men alike expressed the belief that none of the allied governmenie, certainly not theirs, would yield to what they regarded a a trick of the , Central powers to gain time. ' As the news of President Wilson's brief answer moved steadily toward tho outposts and was passed on by one soldior to another, there was a feeliug of relief among the officers of high rank and an air of satisfaction from the enlisted men. Kaiser Can't "Put One Over." The attitude of the soldiers, often-repeated often-repeated was: "Sure he won't. The kaiser can't put over anything like that on him." The American irmy. as yet only slightly scarred by war, has all the enthusiasm en-thusiasm that characterizes all armies arm-ies at tho hcglnning of hostilities. The Americans wish Germanv to be defeated. de-feated. The Austrian prisoners In the hands of the Americans appear to realize the danger to them of the constantly increasing in-creasing American army and are not. inclined to under-estimato the men ace that goes with the enthusiasm born of a victory so easily bought aa was that in tho St. Mihiel salienL Tho allies continue to insist tnat the peace offer was not a trick of Germany, Ger-many, but it should be attributed solo-ly solo-ly to Austria's determination to get out of what her people regard as a bad bargain. Whatever the motive behind the enemy move, there Is no doubt that the American soldier would be disappointed disap-pointed if peace were made at present, unless it Were based virtually on unconditional un-conditional surrender. |
