Show CALL MADE FOR 1 4,000 MEN TO SERVE IN FORESTRY BATTALIONS NOW BEING ORGANIZED BY 0. S. The local offices of the forestry servico ser-vico recoived notification this morning from tho department of Agriculture at Washington, stating that oightecn new forestry battalions are to be organized organiz-ed In the United States, with 750 men to a battalion. Tho total number of men 'in tho new organization will be 14,000. Tho dispatch says tho men are to be in training In the United States for a short time, after which they will bo used for overseas duty In France. They will be mobilized at Camp Humphrey, Va. The non-commissioned officers and privates will come frm their draft contingents assigned to this branch, and tho officers will be assigned from tho forestry service of the United States and from officials and competent compet-ent men of tho lumber industry. Tho Intermountain division of the forestry service of which Ogden Is headquarters, will recommend eight men as officers in the new forestry battalions, at the request of the officials of-ficials at Washington. The bulletin received states that men of experience In wood work of any kind or men who have a particular particu-lar desire to enter this branch of the army should make statements to that effect when questionnaires are filed or to the draft board if the questionnaires have already been sent to the board. The employees of the forestry service serv-ice think this an excellent opportunity opportun-ity to enter the branch of the service for which the men are particularly adapted. Tho message from Washington states that the organization and work of the new battalions will be similar to that of the Tenth and Twentieth engineers en-gineers who are now in France. This Is one of the few branches of the army where civilians may qualify as commissioned officers, according to officials of the forestry service. |
