Show American Cross for Dean of U. S. Aviators Awarded NEW YORK, Oct. 24. Major William Will-iam Thaw, dean of American aviators and holder of the French Croix de Guerro with five palms, has been awarded the American Distinguished Service cross with two cita-tions by General Pershing, it was announced here tonight by the Aero club of America. Amer-ica. Major Thaw who was one of th( earliest American fliers, with the French LaFayette escadrille and wbc was transferred to the American service ser-vice after this country entered the struggle, became an American "ace last June, when he was officially credited cred-ited with having downed his fifth enemy plane.
