On the high ground south of Valenciennes the battle is raging with intense fury, but the British are gradually over- coming the enemy. ) At last reports the British held this line: From Le Faux :' to Robersart to Englefontaine to Ghissignies to Beasdignies, j where they are within a mile and a half of Le Quesnoy, to I the east of Ruesnes to Sommaing to Monchaux. Field Marshal Haig, his troops having hav-ing reached the western edge of the Mormal forest, apparently is striving to outflank that natural barrier on the north by advancing through Lo Quesnoy Ques-noy toward Mons and Mnubeuge. The Germans are fighting stiffly to prevent this, resulting in desperato combats in the villages and other vantage points south of Valenciennes. The BriUsh, however, are pushing steadily ahead and have taken Malng and Yen- sector Friday morning with the British Bri-tish advancing from the hills east of the Ecaillon river toward the railroad and high road between Valenciennes and Le Quesnoy. Immediately north of Valenciennes the British have taken additional villages vil-lages and continue to approach the important crossing of the Scheldt at Conde. This town is six and one-half miles northeast of Valenciennes. French troops east of the Sambre-Oise Sambre-Oise canal in the region of Long-champs Long-champs have repulsed two German attempts at-tempts to drivo them back across the canal. Along the Serre and Souche rivers the French on Friday resumed their pressure after having thrown back enemy efforts south of Mont-cornet. Mont-cornet. In the region east of the Oise the French are reported to have penetrated pene-trated Villers-le-Sec and surrounded La Ferte to the northeast. East of Rethel the French have made an important advance across the Ardennes canal, gaining the village of Ambly and Fleury. At Ambly the i French arc only three miles south of the railroad junction at Amagne, the gaining of which would compel the Germans to withdraw from Rethel and tho line of the Aisne in that region. American troops on both sides of the Meuse in heavy fighting, during Thursday night and Friday morning, made important gains at three points and maintained them against violent German counter-efforts.
