Show liLD'S ii(E v 'J NEW YORK, Aug. 13. Rails gao promise at the opening of today's stock market of extending their recent gains, transcontinentals and grangers showing show-ing pronounced strength. Initial advances ad-vances in those divisions ranged from largo fractions to a point, Union Pacific Pa-cific leading. Coalers also made further fur-ther substantial improvement on a moderate Inquiry for Reading and Norfolk and Western. Industrials were uncertain, United States Steel recording record-ing a nominal loss but soon rallying with Crucible Steel and Pressed Steel Car. Sumatra Tobacco was strongest of tho specialties, gaining 2 points. Gains in rails of the investment class were materially increased during dur-ing the morning, coalers assuming greater preponderance on Norfolk and Western's gain of 3 points while Elk-horn Elk-horn Coal rose 1. Shares of numerous numer-ous western and southwestern roads were Included in the advance which also embraced cotton carriers such as Louisville and Nashville, Illinois Central Cen-tral and Southern railway preferred. Industrials made less progress although al-though United States Steel advanced a point. Among specialties the noteworthy note-worthy feature was General Motors which forfeited yesterday's gain of five points. Liberty 3's continued strong with Anglo-French 5's. Trade slackened perceptibly during the intermediate period but the market mar-ket fully maintained its strength and breadth of the morning. United States Steel approached its recent maximum, Union Pacific and other rails also moved to higher levels and American Telephone hardened. ( " Oiicag Quotations v. J CHICAGO, Aug. 13. Active buying forced a material advance today in the corn market. Continued hot weather and scantiness of moisture formed the chief Incentive to purchase. Besides, receipts here were dwindling. Opening prices, which ranged from lVlc off to lc up with September $1.62 to 1 62- and October Sl.63 to 1.6-1, were followed by decided gains in both of those months. The August delivery' was relatively weak. Oats were mainly influenced by the strength of corn. Receipts of oats, however, were large and there was considerable selling by cash houses. After opening unchanged to 3s c higher high-er with September 69 to 69, the market mar-ket reacted somewhat but then took a fresh upward sing. Provisions showed but lltttlc life. Price changes were unimportant. Subsequently, reports of scattered rains in Nebraska and Kansas .together .togeth-er with word that Buffalo was shipping corn back to Chicago and Peoria because be-cause of high prices in the west led to a reaction. The close was weak, at tho same as yesterday's finish to lc lower, low-er, with September $1.62 to 1.62 and October ?1C3 to 1.63. Later the provision market ranged higher as a result of buying on the part of houses with stockyards connections. con-nections.
