Show FEARFUL RUIN AT MONTDIDIER Heaps of German Dead Lie on Enemy Side With Masses of Debris. WITH THE FRENCH ARMY IN FRANCE, Aug. 13. (By the Associated Press) A fearful spectacle of ruin Is spread out along tho great sweep of rolling pasture lands southeast of Montdidler. Heaps of the German dead lio on overy side and tho fields that were green now aro torn and strewn with masses of debris. Tho enthusiasm of tho French troops have carried them up to the railway line running between Com-pelgno Com-pelgno and Roye. Their most advanced advanc-ed position is south of tho Loges for- est where the enemy Is vainly counter-attacking. Tho spirit of the French troops is superb. In the front line they havo undergone great hardships In their advance ad-vance on ten kilometers through fields swept by machine gun fire. Tho enemy's ene-my's tactics are intended to delay the French until the main German forces can withdraw but great stocks of ammunition am-munition and war material of all kinds are being left. A stirring Incident occurred during tho fighting. A general commanding a French division seeing a battalion hesitate to throw Itself into a dangerous danger-ous position under heavy machine gun fire, directed his auto into the center of this position and standing up shouted shout-ed to his mon: "See, the bodies are gone." His men sprang forward and advanced seven kilometers. |
