Show MARE CDOO USE OF THE ITER SUPPLY OF THE STATE f The Utah State Food administration administra-tion is making an appeal to the users of water for Irrigation purposes over the stale, asking that the copimon practices and precedents be put nslde during the ar to that the wa jr now , being used may bring the greatest re-tojtal re-tojtal results. It is pointed out that many users of water are letting it pin lavishly on land that lies low and Is not In need of great volume, while higher land is not getting enough moisture to take proper care of the ' crops The appeal Is made in written form, i a copy of which was recolved this morning by the city commission. The , appeal follows : "An appeal to the irrigation companies com-panies and water users of Utah: "With a worldwide shortage of food, a tremcnduously large reepon-sibillty reepon-sibillty Is placed upon tho farmers of the irrigated section With the water at their disposal they can produce wl'hout failures, the largest possible .quantity of foodstuffs. This may be done only by using water economi- cally, and applying the surplus that may be saved on lands that do not now have enough water; by develop- , mg a largt r water supply from pump-tng pump-tng and other means, and by applying I -nds of drainage systems the i limited quantity of water that they need. j "Our country calls for aid; this is no time to stand on ceremony and precedents. The irrigation sea-son is upon us; many people are using more water than their crops need, while large areas, usually higher-lying lands, are suffering for want of water. No I hesitation should bo felt in diverting divert-ing the use of water from one par-I par-I eel of land to another for fear of 1 Jeopardizing water rights, and In these days of great national concern, one consideration only is before us we must win the war and precedents ' for times of peace are not established estab-lished by war practices. "The agricultural power of Utah Is measured by the quantity and use of our water. It is a patriotic duty to Increase that power as far as possible by the wise and proper use of water on lands. By an economical uso of the water now available our crop product pro-duct Ion could well be Increased one-third. one-third. The food administration feels under the necessity of placing this matter before the former and all other citizens of the state, and urging urg-ing that It be given immediate and serious attention. We have no hesitation hesi-tation In making to the people of Utah this appeal for a more economical use of water, for they were the first In the United States to convert, by Irrigation, the desert Into a commonwealth, and they will not flinch before the present duty of making the art they founded give double help In this day of our common need. Faithfully yours, (Signed) "W. W. ARMSTRONG. "Food Administrator for c tah." oo |
