June 18 The success of several minor track and field meets 'not far from the battle lines in Franc and Italy has lead to tentative pla: i for a real international set of gamw to be held during the autumn. At j present the schema has only been outlined out-lined in a general way, but the In- 1 terest evinced indicates that such series of events can be made unusually unusual-ly attractive in view of the athletic talent available. The games, ir staeed. will probabh I be held in or near Paris and will include in-clude entries from the English, j French. Italian, Canadian and United i States army, navy and air force;. Much will depend, of course, upon i onditions prevailing at that time, but i it can be staged without fear of contradiction con-tradiction that if the opportunity is favorable there will be a remarkable .j turn-out of athletic talent. The United States forces abroad include in-clude a large number of college and club athletes of prominence in the;; particular athletic specialties and the same is true of those of Canada and England. France and Italy number mong their soldiers many men wbo have, after several years of service, developed remarkable physical power and endurance and from these there could be selected performers whos? ability on track and field would undoubtedly un-doubtedly prove a surprise to other competitors. Lnder certain conditions such a meet if it eventuates might prove a Mar-time substitute for the Olympic games which were scheduled to be held in Berlin during the summer ol 1916. The war naturally side-tracked all possibility of these games and there has not been a meeting of the International Olympic Games commi'-tee commi'-tee for many months. At the la-' conference there were tentative requests re-quests for the privilege of holding ti? games in 1920 from Cuba, Belgium and Scandinavian countries. |
