International Association of Machln-r Machln-r ists and the American Flint Glass - Workers, which has practically tied t up the bottle production industry of Toledo, and which far a lime threatened threat-ened a break between the machinists' ' organization and the American Feder 1 ation of Labor late today was brought a step nearer to final settlement at the ' federation's annual convention. The ground for settlement was con-' con-' tained in a resolution which ordered the machinists' association to comply I with a decision of the federation giving the glass workers jurisdiction in the bottle factories of Toledo as approved by last year's convention As adopted, adopt-ed, the resolution directed the machin ists' organization to take immediate steps to discontinue violation of the federation's decision. President Samuel Gompers, in accordance ac-cordance with instructions from delegates dele-gates to the convention, sent a telegram tele-gram to President W ilson, protesting against the attitude of New-comb Carlton, Carl-ton, president of the Western Union Telegraph company in issuing a call for i convention of emplors for the purpose of forming a "company controlled con-trolled association " Tin action of the company is intended in-tended afl a continuance of its poliey of denying its employes iheir right to belong to a bona Ink', legitimate trade union," the message said. "The policy of the Western Union is out ot har-many har-many with the labor policy of the ail ministration and the war labor board and renders it very difficulty if not impossible to prevent interruption of work essential to successful conduct of the war. " In another resolution which met with favorable action amalgamation of the Lithographers' International union, Photoengravers and Printing Pressmen's Press-men's International union, was ordered. order-ed. Representatives of the Lithograph ers' union bitterly opposed the act, declaring that amalgamation would destroy de-stroy results of years of effort. Debate was cut off when other delegates called for a vote on the resolution. oo |
