Show BRONZE TABLET FOR UTAH'S FIRST ' TEACHER In consummation of a plan started a number of months ago, a tablet of bronze honoring the memory' of Mary Jane Dillworth Hammond. Is soon to be erected on the grounds of the Huntsville school. Mrs. Hammond, who was the wife of the late Bishop F. A. Hammond, was the first school teacher to actively serve the people of Utah in that capacity. As recorded in pioneer history, she crossed the plains with the first pioneers in 1847, and soon after arriving in Salt Lake City opened a school in a tent. From this humble beginning Utah's present great school system has been evolved. The bronze tablet is to be a recognition recog-nition of her great service, by the people peo-ple of Huntsville. |
