Show uu ARBOR DAY A DAY OF PATRIOTISM. This is April 4, and only twelve days will elapse when we arc to celebrate Arbor Day. On Monday, tho governor issued a proclamation in which ho said: "I, Simon Bamberger, governor of the state of Utah, do hereby designate Monday, April 16, 1917, Arbor day, as a legal holiday, and urge that the people peo-ple of tho state of Utah take advan- tago of this opportunity for the beau-tification beau-tification of the homes, lawns, yards and garden spots of the state through the planting of trees, shrubs and vines and further that all good citizens urge upon tho public the immediate necessity neces-sity for planting such cereals and vegetables as may bo possible in ordor to increase the food supply of the state, so necessary to the -welfare of our state and nation. Educators of tho state are particularly urged to Instruct In-struct their pupils In the significance of this occasion and to supervise the practical activity of the children in promoting the object of" this holiday." We are pleased with the governor's suggestion as to the necessity for planting vegetables. Between now and April 16, the garden movement should bo well under way in Ogden and else-vvhere. Going into the war, means that tho United States is to be called on to supply endless quantities of foodstuff for the allies in Europe. This demand will be brought about by tho United States extending credit to tho allies, which will be turned In pait to the purchase of food supplies for tho hungry millions across the ocean. This country must prepare to meet a tremondous obligation. In this work of feeding tho hungry, the school children can participate, and by so doing become a part of the fighting force of tho United States. Why not give a service badge to every child participating in this defense de-fense of Amorlca? Why not enlarge on tho idea and present every young lady every woman who joins in the movement, with an Insignia of meritorious labor for the cause of freedom? nn |
