Show UTAH IS CALLED 01 FOR II? SOLDIERS SALT LAKE, April 4. With the probability that the National Guard of Utah may be called into the federal fed-eral service at any time if congress grants tho request of the president for 500,000 additional men for the army, which it is expected it will do, national guard officers here look to seo enlistments in the guard take a spurt within the next few clays. Local guard officers say that if congress con-gress grants the president's request for the additional men he will most likely call back into the regular army service all national guard units that have been mustered out of the federal fed-eral service. They point ou that he has already Issued an order, through the war department, calling into the yrvico the mustered out units of guard organizations not completely mustered out of tho national service, and their belief is that favorable action ac-tion by congress will be followed immediately im-mediately by an order from the war department calling all the national guard units that have been mustered out into the service at once. It is also pointed out by local guard and army officers that if tho president's presi-dent's plan is approved Utah will be expected to recruit its guard oiganiza-tion oiganiza-tion up to about 4,000 men, instead of the 1,200 mark which it is now striving to reach, and, with the men which it will be expected to furnish for the regular army and the navy by direct enlistment in these branches of the national defense, it will be called upon up-on to furnish between 5,000 and 6,000 men for defense purposes. Instead of the guard of Utah needing need-ing about 500 men, as it does under present conditions, it is pointed out, it will need 3,500 men if the president's presi-dent's recommendation Is approved. nn |
