Show CLEARING CHURCHILL. (Salt Lake Tribune.) The addendum which the British government has made to the report blaming Lord Kitchener and W inston Spencer Churchill for the Gallipoli disaster dis-aster probably has been made at the request of Churchill, it throws an en-tirely, en-tirely, new light upon his attitude and somewhat modifies the blame attach ing to him for the failure of the Dar danelles campaign in 191G It is revealed by the addendum that Churchill urged an attack upon the Dardanelles even before Turkey had entered the war. He argued that Tur key would join Germany and that an attack should be made while the Dardanelles Dar-danelles were short of guns and ammunition. am-munition. Moroover, according to the addendum, an English diplomat had reported that Bulgaria was not to be t eared, as she probably would fight against Turkey. Had the wishes of Churchill been heeded in September of 1911 the Dardanelles Dar-danelles might have fallen an easy prey to English arms. The event proved prov-ed that he had foreseen the action of Turkey, and that he was right in demanding de-manding an attack upon the Moslem power. The British government, however, how-ever, had Just raised a moral issue with Germany over the invasion of neutral Belgium, and was restrained bv this consideration from invading neutral Turkey. |
