Show RUNBREUS OF CARS OF PEACHES SHIPPED FROM UTAH Between 450 and 500 cars of peaches have been shipped from the territory between Clearfield and Brigham City since September 19, according to C. S. Gunnell, general agent of the Pacific Fruit Express In Ogden. This number num-ber of cars has been furnished by the company to date. There are still a few cars being shipped daily, but tho season, seas-on, so far as exporting is concerned, is practically at an end. Considerable comment has been made by some of the country newspapers" newspa-pers" and orchardists in general concerning con-cerning a supposed shortage of cars. This is wrong, Mr. Gunne.ll says, as there has never at any time during the season been a shortage of cars. There has, however, been a shortage of labor to ice the cars and for this reason, on several occasions, the company com-pany could not get cars to the loading points without a few hours delay. In every instance, however, the number of cars requested has been supplied tho shippers. Most of tho orchardists demanded Iced refrigerator cars for their fruit and the icing took several hours and at times, when labor was not available, a slight delay was occasioned. The orders for cars started coming about September 19 and they came in a rush. Every effort was made to supply the number requested on time, but this could not be done with the labor conditions. con-ditions. The whole problem was handled successfully suc-cessfully considering the abnormal conditions, Mr. Gunnell said. One of tho chief problems before the orchardists orchard-ists was tho shortage of baskets and there were many Instances where tho peaches could not be shipped although cars were ready for them. |
