' 1 NOT DOLLARS QUESTION H Workers Against Handling of Non-union Materialsby Union Men. $V v mm SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. l.-4Work'on government shipbuilding contracts ' here, interrupted two weeks ago ,biia -H strike of 30,000 metal trade?' mech'an-ics, mech'an-ics, was to be resumed todays t Tho f J boiler makers' union, one of the twen-ty-five organizations affected, decided at a meeting yesterday to hold out no longer against a temporary wage agreement that had been ratified by allied workers. They announced, how-ever, how-ever, that in returning to work they1 would xdo so "under protest," as Jhe jH terms of the truce permit "the hanM-ling hanM-ling of nonunion material by union- men." According to their statement, it was not "a question of dollars and cents that has been involved In 'their refusal to return to work, up to the present time." The principles of unionism, it wns stated, are concerned. It was as- 'H sertcd that in an Oakland shipyard there were nine boilers made in an Oregon shop where labor troubles ex- IH 1st and that they will refuse to handle IH them. Owners of the plant said today IH the boilers in question were ordered before any labor trouble occurred in jH the northern shop and that it will bo jH necessary to use them in ships for which they were constructed, as a year JH would be required to duplicate them. What action the plant would take in JH the matter was notdisclosed. H The boiler makers also announced Jf that they would not recognize $6 a day as a maximum wage, one of tho demands of tho iron trades council, of which their union is a member. Similar strikes In Portland, Ore., H and Seattle, Wash., were expected, ac- cording to reports, to be settled soon. Negotiations were in .progress in Port- Two. federal adjustment boards, jH headed by Secretary of Labor Wilson, soon will arrive at Seattle to arbitrate the trouble there.
