Show M MM BOYS RECffill Hi LESSONS When the Utah artillery gets ready to go to Franco, the men will have attained at-tained that perfection in horseback riding that will easily qualifv them for positions with tho leading circuses of the country. This was a statement made yesterday by one of the boys, while visiting his folks hero. The main drill the men go through now Is what they call "monkey drill." A man, to be proficient In the artillery branch, must be able to ride a horse in almost every position, must know how and when to start and stop a "horse and must be able to mount while his steed Is going at a gallop. That is what the Battery B men are being taught at present. "It Is great sport," said one of the men, "and the first time I got onto a horse, I found I didn't know a thing about one. It touched my pride somewhat, some-what, because I formerly though I was a pretty good horseman. Just becauso a fellow can ride horseback is not proof he will make a good artillery man. In fact, the officers said they would rather have a man who knew nothing about riding, as he would learn the correct method of handling horses in artillery practice." Battery B has thirty-two horses for drilling. It is all the boys have in the way of artillery equipment and Is probably prob-ably all they will receive until they move to Linda Vista. In spite of this fact, drills are being held regularly in artillery tactics and gun handling, so that when they do get the guns, they will know how to handle them. While tho men like the idea of being able to see their relatives every week, they are Impatient to be off to the real camp of the winter, because thoy realize real-ize that the, sooner they get there, the sooner they will be ready for a try' at tho kaiser and that is the crowning ambition of every man. |
