Show meEmet LONDON, Oct. 1. Another series of thrilling reports of recent naval actions ac-tions against German submarines, illustrative il-lustrative of the manner in which the U-boat menace is being met, was given out last night by the admiralty. The figures are official and authenticated, but no dates are given. The statement begins by reciting how a torpedo gunboat sighted a periscope per-iscope 600 yards away and pursued It. When at a distance of fifty yards the periscopo disappeared and the gunboat gun-boat passed over the submarine. The Impact of the collision was felt and explosive charges were dropped astern. A seaplane reported patches of oil on tho surface and a mine sweeper found an obstruction on the bottom at this point. A torpedo boat patrolling in the Atlantic At-lantic found a steamer torpedoed and sinking, rescued the survivors and circled cir-cled about the locality more than an hour before locating the submarine. The torpedoed boat dropped three submarine sub-marine bombs. Oil and air bubbles reeldng of gasoline came to the. surface. sur-face. A British U-boat sighted a German submersible while both were on tho surface. The British submarine dived and later picked up the enemy through the periscope. A torpedo, fired at 800 yards, caused a violent explosion In the German vessel. When the British arrived he found a patch of oil in which Germans were swimming. A flotilla of mine swoepera was engaged en-gaged In western channel waters when an explosion occurred between a pair of them, the wiro net parting. When tho sweeping wire was pulled In two mines wcro found entangled, one on the ship's side nnd tho other just under un-der the surface. Tho slightest roll of the ship strik-1 strik-1 ing the mines' "whiskers" would have i . - X r iLjjh J been sufficient to set off an annihilating annihilat-ing charge. A second officer with volunteers vol-unteers cooly cut the wire. The mines fell into the sea without exploding. The statement points out the value of the trawler, which hardly costs as much as one broadside from a cruiser. The training of mercantile marine officers In gunnery tactics Is bearing fruit. A British merchantman was at-tacKed at-tacKed by submarine gunfire from a distance of three miles. The shots wero wild and she immediately replied. At the sixth and seventh rounds smoko and flame burst from the forepart of the submarine, which abandoned the chase. Auother ship sighted a periscope twenty yards off tho beam. While swinging on a "hard ported helm" a torpedo passed the stern. A minute later a periscope appeared on the surface on the other side. A shot was fired, immediately followed by another and the submarine disappeared. disap-peared. The surfaco was soon covered with yellow oil. |
