Tho air raid Sunday Sun-day night the fifth within seven days as far as available details show, accomplished ac-complished nothing Important for the enemy. The claim that the now "air barrage" acts as a powerful deterrent to the raiders- seems to havo been jus-tlfled jus-tlfled further in the latest attack, An immense number of guns of various va-rious calibers were in action. Indeed, it was they and not the invaders in-vaders who were putting up tho show. There was an intense and far-reaching searching of the skies in all directions, the flashes of bursting missiles showing show-ing brightly in the' heavens, notwithstanding notwith-standing the extreme brilliance of a full moon. Even more impressive was the terrific din of the guns. Almost nothing is yet known concerning con-cerning damage and casualties caused by the raiders. It is said several of the bombs were dropped in Essex and Kent without causing casualties. Fleet Guns in Action. One invader was driven from London Lon-don by the guns of the fleet. Southwest South-west of the capital another was seen over the Thames estuary. It was hemmed hem-med in by shell fire and wriggled for half an hour trying for an exit from what seemed a trianglo of bursting shells. It finally escaped seaward. A half dozen bombs were dropped in the urbri district without causing casualties cas-ualties or important damage. One of the bombs narrowly missed striking a hospital. Great Air Fleet Expansion. The newspapers, while commending the vigor of defenses, still call for other oth-er measures and advocate reprisals on German towns. They insist on this point with greater vehemence. The Times contends that it would be absurd ab-surd to suppose that the problem of successful defense had been solved. It points that tho intense gunfire Is only a partial deterrent and warns that air warfare is capable of infinite expansion expan-sion and that now methods will have to bo found to combat iL The Times advocates a great air fleet capable of carrying the war Into Germany. |
