Show Theatres AT THE ORPHEUM. The dramntic playlet, missing from local vaudeville bills for a number of I months, is back again this week at the Orpheum theatre and wa.s welcomed wel-comed by yesterday's audience like j the visit of an old friend. This one is presented by the sterling actor, John T. Doyle, and is but one feature of as strong a program as Manager Man-ager Joe Goss has booked this season for his vaudeville patrons It is called "The Danger Line" and is a preach ment against the use of liquor that should make the most enthusiastic local lo-cal tippler glad that Utah will soon be "dry." Doyle is seen in the role of John J. Ifahoney, a big city contractor, con-tractor, and is ably supported in the playlet by Marion VYillard-Doyle. as I I his daughter, and F Cummings. as his j brother-in-law. a big police man. But to review the sketch is to spoil the' enjoyment of it, .suffice to say that it ; has a tingo of comedy and that its : moral is driven home by an intensely , dramatic scene, in which Doyk- does I some splendid acting. Another act that moved last night's ' audiences to a demand for more en-r en-r cores than time would permit, is a novelty musical sketch by George F.I i Howard and Miss Kitty Ross. How-I How-I ard might be termed a banjo wizard and gives a remarkable performance of novelty and straight playing on a number of instruments. Miss Ross plays several selections with him. but her principal work is done as the singer in "A Grand Opera Revue," the main feature of their act. She has a most unusual voice, a pure lyric tenor in quality and of wide range. The "Revue" was a rare Har-I Har-I deen, the noted handcuff king, is back ! i again and his performance creates as I much wonder and Interest as ever. He I succeeded yesterday in removing seven sev-en pair of handcuffs and a leg iron 3 minutes and 20 seconds and in getting get-ting out a can of water, with the cov- . t-i iuukcu uu wiin seven iocks, in $o j seconds, the latter feat causing great amazement. Later, a straight jacket used to hold the murderous insane I was strapped on him by several ruoru-I ruoru-I bers of the local police department and I he got out of this in 2:40. This feat. he accomplished in full view of tho audience. au-dience. Tonight, he will attempt to escape from a bag used by the Weber county sheriff to complete encompass the body of an insane person. Another act that Is in the category of things well termed remarkable, is presented by the Osako Duo, a Japan-j Japan-j ese strong man and his wife. The woman performs feats of great skill I and daring on aerial apparatus upheld I by the man, one piece of the apparatus being a slendor pole. Enthusiastic applause was given these performers. Wood, Melville and Phillips are adept dancers and purveyors of vaude- ville stock comedy. They also have , excellent voices and their act made j an instantaneous and continuous hit wiih the local vaudeville first-nighters Joe Whitehead is an undeniably funny comedian and as such does some good in the world but though the protest pro-test may be vain the use to which I he puts the American Hag should be frowned upon by any self-respecting audience. Other than this, his act is well constructed con-structed and creates continuous and hearty laughter. |
