Show I mm DEFEATS JONES IN A BATTLE AT ALHAMBRA WHICH GREATLY PLEASES FANS I The greatest exhibition of defensive boxing, nerves and dyed in-t he-wool American grit ever witnessed in Ogden was staged last night at the Alhanibra theatre by Frankie Jones, welterweight welter-weight ehampion of the Pacific coast, when he stayed fifteen rounds with Frank Barrieau, Canadian welterweight welter-weight champion. Barrieau won the decision at the finish, but the glory wenl to Jones, who had gone through th mill with a heavier, stronger man, noted for cleverness and his bard bitting bit-ting ability, and made a whirlwind finish that electrified the fans. Hut the comeback was a bit too late, as Barrieau had obtained his margin in . arlier rounds by landing several hard wallopa that the San Francisco boy could not return. Time and again the Canadian landed land-ed fusillades of blows on Jones' "gloves." and, instead of dropping to the mat for the count, as the majority of the- fans expected, he came out fighting in sheer pettishness, Barrieau' would wallop him across the back or the neck, the only places on his body exposed. At other times, when Barrieau Bar-rieau succeeded in getting past the gloves, there was no doubt but that the elang of the bell was welcome to the Californian Then Moose Taussig the first "real" second that the local lo-cal tans nave seen in a corner mis season would bring him around and I i would go into the contest again Eeeming as fresh as ever. It was a i hlbition and Barrieau. after the third round, was as much surprised as anybody. Undeniable eidence that few of the Canadian's blows were landed land-ed effectively was noted after the battle, bat-tle, when it was found, taking stock of Jones' condition, that the only deep mark on him was a discolored Ir i i eye. He was badly affected by the altitude, however, being unable to breathe with any ease for nearly an hour after going to his dressing room. n the other hand. Barrieau was virtually vir-tually unmarked and his breathing apparatus ap-paratus was in fine condition, the re-j .hi of his lonpt r residence in this altitude. The referee question, which seems! to have the had habit of placing a i shadow on athletic events of real im-j poriance in Ogden, again bobbed up last night before the main bout. Taussig, Taus-sig, acting for Jone?, wanted Hardy Downing of Salt Lake or Tom Painter i of Evanston, while Promoter Eddie . Dallas and Barrieau stood for Harry j Knowlden of Ogden. A compromise, was finally effected, by which Knowl- , ii. den was given the third place In the ring and three judges were appointed to make the final decision. The judges were "Hilly" Giasmann of The Standard, Stan-dard, t'aris Zinn of the Herald-Republican and John Flygare, a local fnn. Jones and Barrieau came on for the main event at 9:35 o'clock and recoiT-I recoiT-I ed a warm and evenly balanced recep-j recep-j tion when introduced. Calls were I i hen made for the referee and the fans, though apparently somewhat disgruntled dis-gruntled by the arrangement made for Judging of the contest, accepted it. Fight by Rounds. ; D 45 o'clock the men shook hands land sparred for the first opening. ' Wasting little time. Barrieau made one ! of the swift attacks for w hich he is 'noted, landed two or three of the ' noted, landed two or three short punches and went Into a clinc h Coin-In Coin-In cout of this, Jones missed an up- percut, then put one under to Barrier's Bar-rier's stomach. Then, giving the fans j the first evidence of his cleverness, he spoiled the Canadian's return blow bj ducking under his other arm In he clinch, Jones landed lightly on Barrieau's Bar-rieau's stomach and a second later the Canadian returned the blow with more mire The Californian saved himself further damage by again getting under Barrieau's left arm and by the clever handling of his gloves made his opponent's oppo-nent's in-fighting useless. His work in the first minute gave Barrieau this round. In the second round Jones was con-1 tinually on the offensive. He first, sent his left to Barrieau's face, missi d a right follow up and ducked the re-; turn. Barrieau then landed on Jones' face with a flat glove. In the clinch which followed the Canadian did some butting with his head and the fans showed disapproval. The refc-ree separated sep-arated the boxers and Harrieau next landed h lett on the Californian's face. They exchanged light blows to the body and clinched. In the breakaway Jones sent his left to the Canadian's ear, led out again and. avoiding his opponent's attack, tripped and went to the mat Barrieau stood back and let: him get up. They shook hands and I were sparring as the gong sounded. 1 This round was even. The third round was bad for the an Franciscan. He led with a light, left to Barrieau's face and got a hard right to the ribs in return. They clinched and Barrieau landed another to the ribs. Jones landed on Frank's stomach and they clinched. Separate ed, Barrieau sent a hard nglit swing . i to Jones ear They clinched and then sparred. Jones ducked a vicious right swing, they clinched and Barrieau stopped a light punch with his nose. He returned with a hard one to the stomach, followed up with a fusillade of blows at close quarters. Several of these landed but Jones, surprising everybody, ev-erybody, camo out of the mlxup fighting. fight-ing. Barrieau followed up; landed suc- Svely on the San Franciscan's I nose, face and neck. Barrieau's round. Jones Recovers. Recovering in surprising fashion. Jones played nearly even in the fourth round by his aggressiveness and good defense, but Barrieau got the margin of points They sparred, Jones taking the offensive and landing a light left I punch on Barrieau's face before going ; into a clinch. Barrieau landed a left I to the nose and then there was .'mother .'moth-er flinch Barrieau sent an uppereut to the face, both missed swings and clin bed, Jones landed a left to the Face ;iud they clinched. Barrieau, fail-; to find any other opening, landed in i i bard wallops over the 1 alifor nlan's left, kidney before the round closed. The fifth was even and Barrieau took the sixth, Jones again recuperated, recuperat-ed, with good attention from Taussig, and evened up the seventh and eighth. There was much clinching and Ineffective Inef-fective in-fichting, the blows landed being about equal In number, with Barrieau's having considerably more steam behind them. In the ninth, the Canadian made a big effort to end tho contest. He won the round, landing several hard punches and swings, but Jones' wonderful defensive ability saved him until the gong brought relief. re-lief. By this time the tans were beginning be-ginning to realize that Barrieau's infighting in-fighting was being offset by Jones' well manipulated cloves and cool head and admiration for the Californian's d fensive ability began to be louillv manifested The Canadian, however, held up his mark in the tenth and eleventh and twelfth rounds, though it was a narrow one. One blow landed by Harrieau over Jones' heart In the tenth round looked like curtains, but the Californian continued fighting. A Big Surprise. In the thirteenth came the big sur-prlse sur-prlse Coming out of his corner strong. Jones sparred with Barrieau, who took the first lead, but landed on nothing but gloves. More success attended at-tended his second effort, which was a Btraight left to Jones' chin. This lifted lift-ed the Californian almost off his feet, and sent him back against the ropes. Barrieau fonowed up the advantage and again it looked as though the fight, was over. But It wasn't, for Jones again covered himself up and with a! display of fighting spirit that brought1 the fans to their feet, he evened up1 the round. This spirit continued to sway him in the following round and he outpointed the Canadian, landing ra good punches and dodging nearly all of Barrieau's returns. The contest ended with an even round, Jones' work being such that the fans were nearly evenly divided on the decision. de-cision. But Barrieau had obtained the margin of points, mainly through the greater force of his blows, and a vote of two to one by the judges gaye him ih'' victory. Preliminaries Good. In the preliminaries "Red" Newey of I Ogden took the measure of Bob Moore of Salt Lake in two minutes, the con-J test being stopped by Referee Knowlden Knowl-den at that point to save Moore from further injury. The other contest! went the scheduled four rounds, the principals beinc Young Hogan of Ogden Og-den and Young Manese of Oakland. j The matcning of Barrieau and Jones added another feather to Promoter Eddie Ed-die Dallas' cap, the contest making 105 rounds of boxing out of a possible 120 that the fans have seen this sea-1 son, a record that has not been surpassed sur-passed anywhere this season. |
