Show oo : WARSHIPS WAIT ' FOR SUBMARINE Norfolk, Va , July 24. Appearance of a strange allied warship off Cape Henry today led to rumors here that i a British and French fleet of consid-j consid-j erable size was in the vicinity of the southern drill grounds awaitng the departure of the German submarine merchantman Deutschland or the arrival ar-rival of her sister ship, the Bremen. The new warship Is believed to be one of the new British battle cruisers. cruis-ers. She has three funnels. Simultaneously Simul-taneously with her appearance the four-funneled warship thought to be French, which has been patrolling just outside the three-mile limit for several days, struck out to the east and disappeared. The vessel which appeared today was the fourth from the allied navies that has been outside out-side the capes within ten days. Three of them are supposed to have been British. Failure of the Bremen to appear caused considerable disappointment in German circles here today. The feeling prevailed that the departure of the Deutschland from Baltimore might be delayed indefinitely pending pend-ing receipt of news regarding the Bremen. Bre-men. If she has fallen into a trap, it Is pointed out, it would be unwise for the Deutschland to make out to sea unadvlaed. Although the rumor that a fleet lay behind the warships patrolling the capes lacked verification from any official of-ficial source, many shipping men here believed it was true. They advanced the theory that a considerable force of war vessels might remain virtually hidden In the unfrequented waters of the southern drill grounds, forming a second line for interception of the Deutschland, should she pass the patrol pa-trol ships safely and then, thinking herself safe, rise to the surface. As the report of the presence of a considerable consid-erable allied force outside the capes gaind ground, the belief that the Bremen Bre-men might have been captured or destroyed was more widely accepted. There was no tangible evidence, however, how-ever, to support it. oo |
