Following the course of the old waterway, wa-terway, the waters rushed through' Poppcrton place, down Second and Third avenues, turning on Ninth East to the Second South conduit before the force of the flood was spent. In the residence district of Popperton place and the avenues the telephone poles showed the water mark to have been four feet. 'Cellars were flooded, trees uprooted and lawns and parking strips ruined and left with a coating of six inches of mud. Immediately after the warning of tho cloudburst Commissioner Heber M. In all of the canyons, to which crowds had begun flocking from early morning, the people were driven to seek shelter which could not be found from the downpour. The ravines ra-vines and roadways were turn'ed Into rushing streams and the picnickers were compelled to take the scant shelter shel-ter of the dripping trees on the mountain moun-tain sides. Liberty Park Deserted. At the public parks and resorts th6 crowds fared slightly better when crowding under the pavilions, but many outing parties were spoiled for the day. Liberty park, which became thronged In the forenoon, was deserted desert-ed In the afternoon, and the early band concert wag abandoned. With the clearing skies of the afternoon, however, the people turned again to holiday making, and the parks, resorts and streets during the evening resumed resum-ed the holiday air. During the worst of the storm yesterday yes-terday the street car service at several points was temporarily suspended bo-cause bo-cause of washed gravel clogging the lines and the blowing out of fuses by the electrical storm. There was no serious Injury done, however, and the company quickly released the stalled cars. nn |
