Harris Grocery companies, already moved from tho old stands to the new amalgamated niRrkot, and a third, that of tho C. F. Schade company, yet to be moved, tho Wllcox-IIarris-Schade Grocery company com-pany Is rushing preparations for tho formal opening of its new store, "The Modern Market." The opening is set for April 13, 14 and 15 and on those dates the company will hold open house in its new home, from 12 o'clock noon until 9 p. m. The Wllcox-Harris-Schado grocery corporation is capitalized at $50,000 and Its officers aro J. W. Wilcox, president and manager; J. J. Harris, vice president; C. Fred Schado, treasurer, treas-urer, and J. H. Tillotson, secretary. These, with tho wives of the first j. w. WILCOX. three named, form the directorate. ! Tho store of the company, to bo known as "The Modern Market," occupies oc-cupies the south half of the Ogden Furniture &, Carpet company building on Washington avenue, with two floors and a full basement, tho floor space in each of these rooms being 51 by 125 feet. The company aims to koep in stock every food product known, including fresh meats, and its market is to be equipped In metropolitan metropoli-tan style. J. W. Wilcox, president and manager, man-ager, has been in the grocery business busi-ness In Ogden for the past seventeen years. He commenced by opening a Qmall store at 3G6 Twenty-fifth street and, after seven successful years in ' that location, organized tho Wilcov Grocery company and moved to 2462 I ' 1' J. J. HARRIS. Washington avenue. Two years later, lat-er, he purchased the interests of his associates and until his recent amalgamation amal-gamation with Messrs. Harris and Schade, conducted the business, with Lbe assistance of J. H. Tillotson. Joel J. Harris, vioe president, for i number of years was a principal in Lhe Ogden City public schools. He retired from this profession three years ago, when he bought out the Edgar Jones Grocery company, taking tak-ing over one of the largest and most varied grocery stocks In the city He took up the management of this business and continued In it, until Lhe new firm was formed. C. Fred Schade, treasurer, has been i grocer for the past sixteen years. For 10 years, ho was actively associated asso-ciated with his brothers in the gro- ' eery and meat business in Hunts-vlllc. Hunts-vlllc. Still holding his interests In the Ogden valley store, in 3 900, he moved to Logan, Vhero he conducted a grocery establishment for 3 1-2 years. In 1910, the Schade brothers, made their eutranco info the commercial commer-cial life of Ogden, by purchasing tho Evans Brothers Grocery store and sevoral months ago, O. F. Schade became be-came solo owner of the business. The three grocers, with J. H. Tillotson, who received his training In the business busi-ness under the guidance of J. w. Wilcox, Wil-cox, have built up a big trade, which they believe will he better - served through their amalgamation of interests inter-ests in "Tho Modorn Market" Inside of New Store. In which tho company has been conducting conduct-ing its business since Monday of this week, gives tho visitor an immediate Impression that Ogden has attained the metropolitan idea in the way of a retail food distributing Institution. In the basement which also contains the heating nnd ventilating plant, the power equipment of a York refrigerating refrigerat-ing plant, consisting of a ten horsepower horse-power motor and a four-ton oapaclty ice machine, has heon Installed by the L. A. "Watklns company of Denver. The refrigerating system extonds through all parts of the building whero refrigeration is necessary, compressed com-pressed ammonia cooling the brine which is circulated through pipes, forming a frost that cools the different differ-ent food receptacles. The mechanical equipment of the system was installed instal-led under the direction of Engineer George Sommers and the carpentry work was done under the direction of Mr. Lumley, both representatives of the Watkins company. Received Through Chutea. Tho power department of the plant occupies only a small portion of the concreted basement floor-space and the remainder Is utilized for tho storing stor-ing of an enormous bulk grocery stock, already in plaoe. The stock Is received through c,hutes at the front and rear of the big room and every convenience is accessible for its handling. Coming from the basement, the visitor finds at the rear end of the main floor, an up-to-date order department depart-ment an innovation in local retail 1 grocery circles. In this department, C. FRED SCHADE. all delivery orders are made up, there being more than 100 feet of shelving on which, readily accessible, is carried car-ried a complete line of staple and fancy groceries. Counters are also at hand and the deliveries can be made up and placed in the autotrucks auto-trucks with quick disp'alch, made possible pos-sible by the economizing of space. In addition to the shelving in this department, de-partment, there aro numerous bins and a spacious pintform for the convenient con-venient storing of flour and other bulk cereals. While these features of the big establishment might be particularly noticed by the modern efficiency enthusiast, en-thusiast, the full significance of the name "The Modern Market" will be brought to even tho casual visitor with his first view of the show windows win-dows from the street or the main floor, from the entrances, before the first day of the formal opening Occupying a central position at the front of the room, already In place, Is a large terraced vegetable display stand, on which the housewife may find, In season, every type of domestic domes-tic or foreign vegetable grown, that can bo procured in good condition The display stand is topped by a fountain, foun-tain, which is utilized for keeping the green vegetables fresh Separated by an aisle, from tho vegetable department, depart-ment, and occupying the remainder of th central portion of the big room, Is a square of high show cases, in which the corporation's display oil fancy groceries and bakery goods will be placed. Soda Fountain. A handsome 'Walrus" iceless soda fountain has been Installed on the north side of tho market, Immediately off the front entrance and hero soft drinks of all kinds will be served. Adjoining Ad-joining tho fountain, running to and taking in tho east end of tho market, is the grocery store proper. In addition addi-tion to handsomely finished counters show cases and bins, the equipment of this department Includes more than 500 feet of shelving, on which is carried overy staple food product known to the grocery trade. Tho meat department occupies tho south side of the market and in this is shown tho splendid advantages of a modern refrigerating plant It Is equipped with a 60-foot wall case, reaching from floor to ceiling; a 40-foot 40-foot continuous counter, fronted with high Bhow cases in which meats cut ready for home use aro kept; two 18x 24 feet Ice boxes, and a tiled show window, facing tho street; every compartment being rofrigerated and arranged to keep the meat ice-cold and under cover from tho time it Is received from tho wholesaler until It Is in tho hands of tho consumer, and making an unsanitary condition virtually vir-tually Impossible. The department Is also equipped with all modern meat cutting appliances and several automatic auto-matic computing scales. Tho market is finished in white enamel, and Is equipped with handsome hand-some mirrors, a seml-Indlrect lighting system and an automatic cable cash conveying system. The cash system is operated from tho main office, located lo-cated on an elevated floor at the east end of tho main floor. Private desks for the officers of the firm and tho accounting system occupy the main portion of tho office, with space left for the receiving of patrons for private pri-vate conferences Two cashiers "will bo employed in the office and It is anticipated anti-cipated that a telephone exchange will be installed within a few months. A Delicatessen Shop. The second floor of the store is to be utilized later on for new departments depart-ments one of which, it Is planned, will be a modern delicatessen shop. At the formal opening of "The Modern Market," Messrs. Wilcox, IIarri3, Schade and Tillotson plan to present every child In Ogden with a toy balloon and every lady visitor with a favor of some sort. ' In connection connec-tion with the affair, a pure food show will be held, at which fifteen demonstrators demon-strators will deaily serve tho visitors. visit-ors. Speaking of this yesterday Vice President Harris of the company stated that the visitors could obtain a full meal by accepting the hospitality of the demonstrators and that nothing noth-ing but Utah products would be served. The Wllcox-Harrls-Schade company, he said, welcomes the public pub-lic to the formal opening of Its new establishment and invites a thorough Inspection of it. 00 |
