Boston in the 1 ' American league and Brooklyn in the 1 i National those are our choices to H J gain the right to clash in the world's H f series of 191G. The Red Sox. present 8 world's champions, offer the same lineup as last year. It looks good H) 1 enough to win. despite the strengthen- H 1 lng of several other clubs The Dodg- m i ers have the same bunch that land- H j pd third in the National league last M I year and have added on several men H a who should prove Important aids. H i Brooklyn has not had a pennant since Hjll 4900, when Ned Hanlon won his sec- H ond straight flag, so a victory this HJr year would just about turn the town jlfji upside down. HlPi The Red Sox outclassed the field HJiil last year in the American league. HiiJ though Detroit managed to hang on Hh closely through spectacular work of Ty Cobb and Sam Crawford, helped Mjl j bv Bobby Veach the hardest hitting outfield in recent years. When the HI crucial test came in a series two HjFjl weeks before the end of the season. Hjfjj Boston walloped the stuffing out of Hljl the Tigers, with that wonderful pltch-Hiji! pltch-Hiji! ing staff doing the bulk of the work Those pitchers are on the job H again this year I eonard, Shore, Fob- ter, Mays, Gregg and others. The Infield crew Hoblitzell, Gainer, Barry, Bar-ry, Scott, Gardner and Janvrin will take the field, with the same versatile versa-tile outfield of Speakor, Hooper and Lewis also on deck and Manager Car-rigan, Car-rigan, Cady and Thomas behind the bat. With real strength in every department de-partment and Bill Carrlgan owning another year's experience in the role of manager, we can't see how the Red Sox will be stopped. Detroit and Chicago would have the fight for second place to themselves if it were not for the fact that the Yankees have acquired a mass of new talent. "We can't remember a ball club in history that added on so much extra strength between the close of one season and the start of another. The Yanks will have two new inflelders, Home Run Frank Baker Ba-ker at third and Joe Gedcon of Salt Lake City at second; also a brand new outfield of Lee Magee', Federal league star; Frank Gilhooley, speed marvel of the International in 1915. and Fritz Maiscl, who has been made oer from a third baseman. Niclc Cullop, the crack Fed southpaw, will strengthen the pitching staff, and Germany Ger-many Sehaefcr as a coach should nrov'o Manager Bill Donovan's right hand man. We pick the Yanks to beat out both Detroit and Chicago for second. The White Sox are a gang of all J stars. Some people think they will i get nowhere because of Manager i Clarence Rowland's brief experience' in the majors. There is so much hit-tin hit-tin jituI nltrhlncr strencth on the club that we believe it will nose out Detroit for third, since the Tigers are weak in pitchers . It Is hard to figure Washington in the first division, even If Walter Johnson is In old time form, but the Senators ought to beat out Fielder Jones and his St Louis club of amalgamated amal-gamated Feds and Browns. The Athletics Ath-letics were a terrible joke last year. Connie Mack's 'efforts to rebuild are likely to begin to show by the middle of this season, however, and he ought to land them above Cleveland. Brooklyn's chance to take the National Na-tional league crown depends largely on how its old time battery men act. Chief Meyers, just obtained from the Giants during the winter, is a better catcher than any of the 1915 Dodger backstops from the standpoint of handling han-dling pitchers and throwing. If he also can hit in his old form, Brooklyn Brook-lyn will have a slugger this year uhere It had weaklings last season. Rube Marquard. Larry Cheney, Jack Coombs and Nap Rucker are veteran j :vlrleri who once ranked right at the oo If two or three of them will de-' de-' liver, In addition to Dell, Smith, I Pfeffer and other youths, the Dodgers will outclass the lest of the league 111 pitching. Mike Mowrey, from the Pittsburg Feds, makes a valuable acquisition as utility lnfielder. something the Dodgers Dodg-ers needed badly last year The regular infield of Daubert, Cutshaw, O'Mara and Getz is above average and the outfield good with Wheat, Stengel, Hy Myers and the former Feds, Johnston and Hickman. With Konetchy, a better first baseman base-man than Schmidt, supplanting the retired husky, the Braves have picked pick-ed a Federal league plum. They have the rest of the Infield that helped win in 1914 Evers, Maranville and Red Smith Gowdy and Whaling will remain as backstops and the pitching regulars, Rudolph, Tyler, Nehf. Barn-ed, Barn-ed, Ragan and JameB, will be reinforced rein-forced by Allen, Knetzer and Reul-bach Reul-bach from the Feds. Sherwood Magee, Connolly and Snodgrass probably prob-ably will be outfield regulars. This bunch under Stalllngs is almost a sure bet for at least second. The PhlllleB, with their 1915 lineup, would have to hustle to beat the same teams they faced last year, but with the stronger opposition we can't see a chance for them to .be better than third. We think they will land there, however, since the addition of Chief Bender seems certain to strengthen the pitching staff. The Giants ought to come in fourth with outfielders Kauff and Rousch, catcher catch-er Rarlden and Pitcher Fred Ander-Bon Ander-Bon added fTom the Feds. Some pick them for first, but we can't see it. w Joe Tinker has a great quantity of talent in Chicago but has had a lot of trouble making his Cubs and Fedsl fit in together. It is unlikely the mot- ley crew will do better than lend tin second division, Cincinnati seomi better off generaly Uian last year which makes us believe the RedB wll get above Pittsburg and SL Louis. De spite the fair baseball played by lh( Cardinals In their city series wltl the Browns, wo nominate them fo last place this time. |
