Show w DEATH HASTENED BY CIGARETTES. In an article explaining why women live longer than men, Dr. A. H. Burr in a medical Journal, makes a vigorous attack on tobacco, particularly the cigarette, declaring:: "The physiological effects of tobacco tobac-co are now well determined. Its only active principle Is nlcdtln. In the smoking of cigarettes two other more 'highly injurious poisons-are evolved from the partial destruction of the nlcotin and its wrapper, known a3 py-ridin py-ridin and aldehydefurfurol. Because tobacco does not kill Its devotees in a brief space of time, and becauso It operates indirectly through slowly developed de-veloped pathologic changes In organic structures, any alarm over Its ability to shorten life Is treated as a Joke. A young man In his teens, addicted to cigarettes, when cautioned about their Injurious effects, replied- 'In my work I meet a great many physicians who smoke cigarettes. If It Is so harmful as 'all that, I shouldn't think they would do It' In reply, ho was told" that In spite of the fact that no one knows tho Injuries of tho morphine-habit better than the doctor, yet more doctors are treated In Institutions Institu-tions for that habit than any other clnsB. A doctor's example may bo a dangerous ono to follow sometimes. "If it Is true that nicotln has a special affinity for certain organs that induce deleterious changes In the cells and tissues of the vascular system sys-tem by which the span of lifo is materially ma-terially shortened, a knowledge of this fact should be widely disseminated disseminat-ed among the youth before the injurious injur-ious habit Is acquired. "In conclusion, we have shown, first, that the female, though outnumbered outnum-bered at birth and by immigration, reaches old age in far greater numbers num-bers than the male: secondly, that this disparity is due to certain extrinsic ex-trinsic poisons capable of Inducing oardio-vaBcular presenlllty, to which toxins the male Is obviously more prone than the female; thirdly, that the nlcotln-hablt answers every specification speci-fication of a cardiovascular toxin, and Is, therefore, one of the very significant signifi-cant reasons why fewer men than women wo-men attain old age." Now that women and even girls in America arc learning to smoke, and many of them are addicted to the habit, hab-it, we may look for an incroase In the female death lists We believe cigarette smoking by boys and men is decreasing, but there is a rapidly increasing addition to the number of women cigarette fiends oo |
