Show oo EXPLOSIVE SHELLS IN WAR. Has the United States war department depart-ment lost a most valuable invention, which Germany is possessed of and which made possible the destruction, of the fortifications at Liege. Namur and Antwerp? Louis Gathman, an American inventor, before the senate committee on war expenditures, today to-day related that he is the originator of the high explosive shells used by Germany in her monster guns and that ho offered the invention to our war department but his proposition was rejected, although at the time he proved that his 6hells were far more effective than any in use by the United States coast defense or navy. His public statement invites a reply re-ply from our ordnance officers, which in Itself Implies that Gathman fears not a successful contradiction. Gathman points out that armor penetrating projectiles have never sunk a ship and today all German guns are supplied with the high explosive ex-plosive shell, j If Gathman is correct, our war of ficers are stupidly slow in accepting modern inventions. |
