Show ITALY HELD UP GERMAN COTTON New York, Oct. 22. American cotton cot-ton valued at approximately fifty million mil-lion dollars shipped from the United States and consigned to Germany Is In possession of the Italian government govern-ment according to Captain J. W. Batchelor of the Liverpool Salvage Association, As-sociation, who arrived 'here today on tho steamship Baltic from Liverpool. Captain Batchelor said that he but recently re-cently came from Italy where he was engaged in looking after this cotton. For several months, he said, previous to Italy joining the allies, all cotton consigned to Germany through Italy was detained, one of the last pretexts used was that there was a shortage of cars, and to overcome this Germany sent to Italy a large consignment of rolling stock. Italy is in possession of both cars and cotton. Captain Batchelor is going to tho Pacific coast to look after ships that his company is Interested in. nn . |
