Show uu HOW BOARD OF EDUCATION WAS TRICKED. Before the close of the last school year, Superintendent Mills submitted a long salary list to the board of education, edu-cation, and Informed the board that if the proposed increases in salaries were not granted, not ten teachers could be re-engaged. At that time the city schools were facing a deficit of over 139,000, which, with the sinking fund which had been Invaded, made a total indebtedness of between 50,000 and $60,000. The members of the board viewed this move as a deliberate attempt to embarrass them. Mills could go back to the teachers and report that the hoard had refused to comply with his request, and he could array tho teachers against the board, though he well knew the insurmountable obstacle obsta-cle which stood in the way of the board members in their desire to give the teachers full compensation for their labors. The schools today are heavily in debt, notwithstanding the school tax has been increased from 10 mills to 12.1 mills. This is a phase of high taxation in Ogden which the property owners eventually must look Into and seriously consider. Here is a part of the salary list, with proposed increases in salaries, which Superintendent Mills recommended recom-mended to the school bonrd last June: Proposed Teacher. Salary. Salary J. E.
