Show NEW GOLD DISCOVERIES IN AFRICA. A premising discovery of gold in al luvfal and in t la t reefs in the dolomite dolo-mite series is reported from the Lyd-enberpc Lyd-enberpc gdistrlct. The annual reort of the Fast Rand Proprietary mines shows that the pa able ore reserves have been reduced to 5,600,000 tons, valued at fi.T dwt. over ".4 in.; 1,93S,000 tons were crushed crush-ed and 59 per cent was payable The accumulation of unpavable ore in the mines is now S ,500,000 tons, of a value under 4 dwt The Randfontein Central mine crushed 253000 tons for a recoverv of 24s d per ton. or 3,103,116 pounds, with an expenditure of 1 ?s 2d per ton, or 2.182,000 pounds, and a working profit of 921.134 pounds. The ore re-sen re-sen os have been increased to 0.818.-909 0.818.-909 tons, valued at 5i dwt.. while I.'- 816,680 tons are at present unpayable, alued at 3.1 dwt. Bofa these mines hae been hampered by shortage of native labor and strike stoppage The City Deep mine is still in a mess, but conditions are improving No real progress can be made, however, how-ever, until the vertical circular shaft is sunk to the required depth to provide pro-vide proper ventilation The mine Is a rich one, the ore reserves brine -,-167.680 tons, valued at 10 dwt Work lng costs, however, on an output of 468,000 tons varied from 25s 7d to 23s 7d, from 8 s to 5s per ton more than they should be. The copper output of the Transvaal has Increased from 49,142 pounds in 1912 to 138.328 pounds in 1913. This is solely from the Messina mine, which has now rail communications and is Increasing its output.
