Nevada, New Mexico, Idaho, and Colorado, He is now on a trip over the district for the purpose of conducting examinations examina-tions for male stenographers and typewriters and for a general inspec tlon of the different sub-offices of the civil service commission While here he looked over the affairs of the local lo-cal office, in company with Postmas ter VY V Browning and local Clork William Johnson. In the courue of a conversation with Postmaster Browning, Mr. Snyder stated sta-ted that in the near future the examination ex-amination papers for the district would be passed on at the San Fran Cisco office of the commission. This will be a departure from the old rule, as this work has heretofore been done at Washington. The innovation, innova-tion, however, will only mean the employment of one or two additional clerka In the San Francisco office 3s the applicants for examination In the twelfth dibtrict are not nearly as numerous nu-merous as in the eastern states. The reason for this Is believed to rest on the tact that private lnuiuese In the west offers a much more Inviting Invit-ing field of employment from a financial finan-cial point of view than does the government gov-ernment service. This is particular!) particu-lar!) true in regard to male Btenogrfi piu rs and typewriters, Tie paab ap pllcants for examination in this llii" of work are so few, In fact. Secretary Secre-tary Snyder stated, that his Office can barely supply the twelfth district, and few can be spared for service at the national capital. Applicants tor positions in the civil service, according to Mr. Snyder, are as a rule line types of young Ameri-oan Ameri-oan manhood, mentally, morally and physically; But few cases of dishonesty dishon-esty are found in the dealing of the civil service employes with the government. gov-ernment. As to the opportunity for male stenographer sten-ographer to obtain positions with tin- government, the official stated that Ik- eould place a number ol them in offices In the twelfth district at the present time, with an entrance talary ol $900 a year. |
