Show OPENING OF BYES I BY TMLGIANS, Paris. Nov 16 The Belgians again I have wrecked the German plans. The allies for nearly a week have 1 been trying to dislodge the invaders. . 1 ut without success, owing to the iso- laled position of the German strong- J hold and the Impregnable defensice ! works erected by the Germans. J Today several Belgian detachments of engineers with a strong force of sappers worked around to the south a of the town and cut another dike, J which has flooded the rear of the I German position to an impassable 3 depth, marooning the occupants of j the town and cutting them off from I the main body. j The supporting columns of German H infan'.ry and machine gun detacn- tmmm ments were driven back to the east- I ward by the flcod and thousands of .'J lives were lost In the withdrawal. I The field to the east and south of I Dixmude tonight is covered with dead hundrcds of bodies of men and I horses floating in the swirling wa- 4 ters of the flood. I The inundated region now extends from a point just south of Nieuport A lo the forest of Houtchourst. about i three miles tiorth of Bixschoote. -t Between Bixschoote and Dlxmude several strong columns were being 5 hurled forward en masse in an ef-I ef-I fort to force the canal again and I regain the western bank. But the II orrents loosed by the opening of the I dike caught them on the front and tfiey fled in great disorder in their anxiety to escape being wiped out. Regiment Annihilated. One entire regiment, which had sought to escape the wall of water, withdrew along a ridge of ground 1 1 running parallel with the canal. When i ihey reaehed a point just to the south of Bixschoote a terrific bom-I bom-I bardment opened from the allies' trenches with artillery, rapid flrers and rifles The column was within easy range and the Germans were mowed don rank upon rank until the whole regiment was annihilated. The successes recorded in the afternoon after-noon official communique from Bordeaux Bor-deaux greatly increased the elation produced in Paris on the previous day, when the announcement was J made that the Germans finally had been forced to evacuate entirely the left bank of the Yser. Today aiso came ' the semi-official news from Bordeaux that all of the official government staff and the members of the ehamber of deputies will return to Paris tomorrow to es tablish the government here. This is interpreted generally by the public to mean that General Joffre has given President Polncare assurances assur-ances that there is not only no further fur-ther danger of a German drive on Paris, but that the effort to cut through to the French coast likewise is a failure To the south of Ypres the fighting rages with great fury, although the burden of the conflict is on the artillery, ar-tillery, the biting gale., driving hall, rain and snow before it. bringing practically to a halt the furious attacks at-tacks and counter attacks which have made this region an iufemo during the past month. Only twice during the day did thf German forces attempt attacks. Pach of these was violent and made under coer of terrific fire from the big guns of the enemy, but in each case they were hurled back. In the second assault the Prussians succeeded in gaining the first line of trenches, but the British forces rallied and promptly expelled the intruders. During the flgnt of the past two days the allies have been able to regain re-gain a number of supporting positions posi-tions which had been held by the enemy en-emy for several days. |
